Getting Started
By Charles Keaton

It’s hard to know where to start when talking about this newsletter and the purpose of it. Of course, the main purpose of it is to keep all of you alumni and former teachers informed on what’s happening at Lockney High School and Lockney ISD. Who knows, I may even include some community news from time to time.

One of the most important things I want to include is news from and about our wonderful alumni. I know that many of you have wonderful stories and information to share with other classmates or alumni. With your help, I would like to highlight our alumni from time to time in this newsletter. If you have something you want to share, send the story to me. Try to keep the length to between 250 and 260 words.

Another thing I would like to do is share the celebration of the marriages of alumni, the births of children and grandchildren (yes, this includes the greats) and remember those that have passed on. Also send me anniversary announcements of 50 years or more. Are you planning a class reunion, send me the details to share with others.

Send all of this information to keaton.charles@lockney.isd.tenet.edu and I will include the information in each newsletter.

Another feature I am including will be technology tips and information. Obviously, since this is an email newsletter, everyone is interested in technology so I would like to share my knowledge with various tips and pieces of information in a “Tech Talk” column. If you have questions along this line, email me and I might use it for the basis of a future column.

A Note from the Superintendent
By Phil Cotham

I hope each of you have fond memories of your days in Lockney schools. We are proud of the tradition that has been built here in Lockney, but we are also proud of the progress that is being made toward excellence. No matter what your role was as a student, you are part of that tradition. You helped form a strong base on which our quest for excellence continues.

Please make time to stop by and see what’s new and to visit with teachers and staff. Our next homecoming is in the fall of 2008 – I hope you can attend. Thanks for being part of something special in Lockney in past years and laying groundwork for future generations.

News around LHS & LISD
By Charles Keaton

School year 2007-08 started on August 27. New faces around the district include Monty Teeter replacing Martha Sue Lusk, Jeff Vanlandingham replacing Tommy Caldwell, Art Woolever replacing Desiree Pharis, Denise Smith taking over for Barbara Carthel and Lisa Brown taking Denise’s fourth grade aide position.

Martha Sue and Barbara retired at the end of last school year. Barbara and her husband, Charlie still reside across from the elementary school. Martha Sue and Raymond built a new home in south Lubbock and have moved there. Raymond is the executive secretary for Region 16 UIL Music so we still see them at all of the band contests.

The Longhorn football team has been working hard but have yet to put one in the win column. In the season opener, they fell to the Slaton Tigers 27-19. The second game against the Sundown Roughnecks was cancelled at halftime due to bad weather with Sundown leading 14-6. The Seagraves Eagles needed a late interception return to pull out the victory over the Horns, 35-28. Travelling to the Tulia Hornets field, the Horns again came up short, 35-28 and in the final non-district contest, 1A powerhouse New Deal Lions escaped Mitchell-Zimmerman Field with a 21-14 victory. The Horns are playing everyone close and hopefully the tough non-district schedule has prepared them for the tougher district schedule.

The Horns lost a tough district opener last week at Abernathy, 45-7.

The Horns entertain Shallowater Oct. 19, go for the Floyd County Championship at Floydada on Oct. 26, host Childress in the final home game on Nov. 2 then close out the regular season at Littlefield on Nov. 9.The basketball schedules for High School and Junior High are now posted on the website.

On Sept. 29, Rob Lovett, band director, took his flag line to the West Texas Auxiliary Championships in Lubbock. Rusty Keaton, class of ’03, serves as coach for the flags. The seven girls brought home the championship trophy in the 2A division defeating defending champions Colorado City as well as Littlefield and nine other schools.

Mr. Lovett and the Longhorn band are preparing their contest show, the Wizard of Oz, for the UIL Marching Contest on Oct. 20 at Lowrey Field in Lubbock. The band marches at 8:05 PM in Lubbock.

Tech Talk
By Charles Keaton

When I originally thought about doing this column, I thought I had lots to share with you but when I started to come up with the first installment I couldn’t think of a thing to say. I finally decided to share some of my favorite websites. Some are techie sites and some are just fun sites.

One of my favorite techie people is Kim Komando (www.komando.com). Komando has a weekly radio show that provides simple solutions to techies, newbies and the average computer user. She also sends out four different newsletters filled with lots of helpful information.

Two other sites that I find lots of trivial but useful information are www.nationmaster.com and www.statemaster.com. These sites provide demographic information as well as maps of the nations and states. It’s a great site for researching a country or a state.

Ever wonder what a website use to look like or how it’s changed over the years. Go to www.archive.org. This site has been archiving Internet websites since 1996 with over 85 billion pages archived. It’s interesting how much websites have changed over the years. Check out Google and Yahoo for examples. Websites aren’t the only thing they have archived. Over 600,000 moving images, live music, audio recordings and texts have been archived.

One of the biggest problems facing all of us that use email is the “junk” email. I know here at the district, we receive over 4300 emails a day into our system with over 84 percent being stopped or marked as “spam”. We utilize commercial systems to handle our junk. But at home, we all need something to help filter out the junk. If you are using a email reader such as Outlook Express, Outlook, Thunderbird or any other reader that downloads your email from your ISP’s server then you need something to help filter the junk.

One of the filters that I’ve reviewed is called Spamato, located at www.spamato.net. It is FREE (I like free especially because a lot of good software is considered Open Source). It supports Outlook, Thunderbird and Mozilla Mail but it also has a proxy called Spamatoxy to use with other email readers such as Outlook Express, Eudora and other readers.

Another product (it is also FREE) is Comodo AntiSpam Desktop located at www.comodoantispam.com. It is a Windows XP application only.
