The Longhorn Band, under the direction of Mr. Rob Lovett, advanced to the area marching competition in Lubbock on Oct. 27. Twenty-one other 2A bands were also at the competition with four being allowed to advance to the state marching contest. After the preliminary round, the Longhorn Band was in fourth place and advanced to finals with 10 other bands.

In the evening competition, the Longhorn Band turned in a wonderful performance but placed eighth in the finals. This was the best ranking ever achieved by a Longhorn Band. Mr. Lovett was assisted by Danny Huggins, class of ‘00 and Rusty Keaton, class of ‘03.

The Longhorns finished another disappointing season on the football field going 0-10. In the second district game, the Horns were defeated by Shallowater 27-7. The Horns travelled to Whirlwind country for the County Championship but fell to the ‘winds, 39-0. Childress came to town Nov. 2 and left with a 60-14 victory. In the final game of the season, Lockney was defeated by Littlefield, 46-14.

Abernathy, Childress and Littlefield will represent district 3-2A in the football playoffs. Littlefield is the big school representative with Abernathy and Childress in the small school division.

Also competing were James Mercado, class of ’09, Jonathan Suarez, class of ’08, Timothy Padilla, class of ’09, Renee Cruz, class of ’11, Angel Cruz, class of ’09 and Chris Castorena, class of ’08.

Alumni Profile: Larry Davis, 1982
By Charles Keaton

Larry Davis, class of ’82, has been a busy person since leaving Lockney in 1982. Larry graduated from West Texas State University (now WT A&M) with a degree in Mass Communications in 1986. He spent four and 1/2 years working at KCBD-TV (Channel 11) in Lubbock. While in Lubbock he completed his Education degree from Lubbock Christian University in 1991.

In 1993 he went to work for Windham ISD. Windham handles the education for the prison system in Texas. Larry has worked at units in Lubbock, Lamesa and Brownfield teaching everything from fourth grade-level subjects, GED computer lab and “Changes,” an exit level program to help with re-entry into the “free” world. He has helped 100s of men receive their GED and hopefully live a better life. He worked for WISD for 10 and 1/2 years.

In 1993, Larry married the love of his life, Tamberly.

In 2004, Larry accepted a position teaching fourth grade at Brownfield. Since then he has taught keyboarding at the middle school and is now in charge of the discipline class and all the standardized testing at the middle school. Larry says it’s never a dull moment at the middle school.

In 2004, Larry and Tamberly became foster parents. They have three beautiful daughters through foster care and are planning to adopt all three. Brandy is 15, Alexis is nine and Jasmine is seven.

The Davis’ are devout Christians and very involved in their church activities.

“I have a very blessed and wonderful life,” Larry said.

Tech Talk
By Charles Keaton

Last month I sent out information regarding some spam fighting software so this month I thought I’d share some good ‘Free’ spyware/malware programs. Unlike anti-virus software, you can and should have more than one anti-spyware program. Most of them have to be manually run but there are a few that have continual scanners much like anti-virus software.

One of the top players in the battle against spyware is Adaware from Lavasoft. The free download for home use is available at www.lavasoftusa.com. Adaware has been battling spyware since 1999. They offer different versions but the free version will run on Windows XP and Vista as will their Plus and Pro versions. The paid versions include among other things the ability to do real-time monitoring much like anti-virus software.

Spybot Search and Destroy is another anti-spyware software that I’ve used extensively is. It is available at www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html. Spybot will operate under nearly any operating system that is out including Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista, Mac OS and Linux/Unix.

AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition is from Grisoft, a company that also offers good, free anti-virus software. It can be downloaded from free.grisoft.com. I haven’t evaluated the anti-spyware software but I use AVG Anti-virus at home and install it on others home computers. As I mentioned last time, I like free software and there are lots of good, free software available.

I also thought some of you might be interested in some of my favorite add-ons to Firefox. I won’t say I use FF a 100% of the time, but I use it more than Internet Explorer. One of my new favorite add-ons is Foxmarks. It allows you to synchronize your bookmarks between multiple computers. Once you install on you Firefox browser, it automatically synchronizes your bookmarks each time you log onto the Internet. I use it on three different computers and already it has saved me time looking for a site I bookmarked at home but forgot the link by the time I got to my office. If you use FF on more than one computer, this is a definite add-on to utilize.

If you have a question or you would like to share a favorite website or software product, send your information to me and I might include it in a future edition.
