News around LHS & LISD
By Charles Keaton

Next Friday, Feb. 1 is the bi-annual realignment of the UIL districts. At 9AM, LHS and all the other high schools around the state will find out what changes have taken place in classification assignments and district assignments. Based on the 2006 realignment numbers, LHS would be 1A BUT you can NOT second guess what the UIL is going to do. They recently announced that after experimenting with four teams advancing from each 5A district, that beginning next fall, four teams will advance from each 4A district. This probably means there will be more than 229 4A schools beginning next year which will impact all the other classifications. I will send a special email out next Friday with the new information regarding Lockney.

District basketball is well under way. The Lady Horns are currently 3-3 in district, tied with Littlefield for third place. The Longhorns are currently 0-4 in district play.

Rob Lovett, band director, will be taking 19 high school students and 18 junior high students to all-region band this weekend.

High school students participating will be Audrey Collins, Jonathan Coleman, Bryan Cooper, Desiree DeLeon, Destinee DeLeon, Patrick Doucette, Laura Fulton, A.J. Jimenez, James Mercado, Zach Montandon, Brendi Moralez, Cole Patton, Aaron Rendon, Christopher Rodriguez, Lorenzo Salazar, Anna Sherman, Stephana Villarreal, Tori Wilburn and Jathan Williams. Junior high students participating include Susie Salas, Esperanza Garcia, Stacey Rodriguez, Jennifer Ybarra, Amber Segovia, Brandi Brown, Ian Dunbar, Christopher Hinojosa, Justin Roberts, Bishop Zambrano, Lindsay Stewart, Kelby Bice, Riley Teeter, Jonathan Sustaita, Marcos Bernal, Landon Kidd, Steven Fernandez and Luke Sherman.

The students will perform at the Lubbock Civic Center on Saturday, Jan. 26, JH is at 2PM, HS is at 3PM and HS Honor Band is at 3:45PM.

Super Bowl: New England or New York?
By Charles Keaton

With the 42nd Super Bowl only a few days away, I thought it would be fun to see who the Lockney Alumni think will win this year. The Patriots are only the second team to come into the Super Bowl undefeated and are the early favorite but the Giants have been playing solid football since the playoffs started, winning three straight road games, at Tampa Bay, at Dallas and at Green Bay. Also, don’t forget that New England only defeated New York 38-35 in the final week of the regular season.

Let’s take a poll, send me an email with the subject Super Bowl 42 and then in the body simply say NE or NY. Send them to me by next Thursday, Jan. 31 and I’ll send out the results on Friday, Feb. 1 when I send out the UIL update.

I’m not really a fan of either team, but the Texas Tech connection is with New England. Former Red Raider, Wes Welker is having a phenomenal year at the slot back and former Red Raider Sammy Walker was the team’s leading rusher before he was placed on injured reserve so I’m leaning toward the Patriots for this reason.

Here’s some Super Facts about the Super Bowls from www.nfl.com. The NFC leads 21-20 but the AFC has won eight of the last 10. The Super Bowl has never had an overtime game. The team that wins the toss is 19-22 and has lost four straight. This is the 12th Super Bowl featuring teams that met in the regular season. The team that lost in the regular season has won six of the previous 11 games.

This will be the Giants 18th NFL title game dating back to 1933. Giants long snapper/linebacker Zak DeOssie’s father Steve played in Super Bowl XXV for the Giants when Bill Belichick was the defensive coordinator. The DeOssies are the ninth father-son combination to reach the Super Bowl. With Eli Manning’s appearance, there are 18 sets of brothers that have been to the big game but Eli and Peyton are the first set of brothers to be the quarterback.

Tech Talk

WORD OF CAUTION: There is an email that is circulating that is a FAKE Windows update notice. One thing to always remember (if you use Windows) Microsoft NEVER sends out update notices via email so do NOT trust one that is deliver via email. If you receive strange email like this, ask yourself, “How did they get my email address?” It is VERY important to keep your Window machines updated, so go to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us to get your computer updated.

I know most of us don’t want to think about it, but tax time is upon us. If you need forms or questions answered the best source for that is www.irs.gov. The site provides lots of information to help you with your taxes and then if you are getting a refund, you can track when it will be sent to you or deposited into your bank account. This is definitely NOT one of my favorite sites but it sure comes in handy this time of the year.

As I’ve mentioned before, I love free software that is GOOD software. One of the best free software products that’s out today is called OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org). OpenOffice is a multiplatform, multilingual office suite. It includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database, presentation, drawing and math expression writer. It will read documents created by the most popular office software (Microsoft and Corel). It also allows you to save your files in those formats as well. This is especially important if you are sending to others that haven’t changed to OpenOffice.

Another one of my favorite Firefox add-ons is Forecastfox Enhanced. It givesup-to-date weather information when you have Firefox open. The information can appear anywhere in the browser’s toolbars or status bars. It includes severe weather alerts, current radar, current conditions and the forecast for the next few days. One of the nice things about it, is it does not use any more system memory than Firefox is using unlike some of the other popular desktop weather information programs. To download Firefox go to www.mozilla.com and to get add-ons for Firefox go to addons.mozilla.org.

If you have a question or you would like to share a favorite website or software product, send your information to me and I might include it in a future edition.
