News around LHS & LISD
By Charles Keaton
My apologies for running late with the March newsletter, but there was so much happening the last few days including UIL and OAP that I wanted to get as much in as possible.
District UIL Academics meet was held at LHS on Wednesday, March 26. LHS finished in fourth place and will send nine students to Regionals. Bryan Cooper won the Computer Science contest and will be joined by teammates Zach Montandon, DJ Hernandez and Chris Rodriguez. Lauren Stewart won both Editorial and Feature Writing. Alisha Damron placed second in Literary Criticism. Lezlie Jackson placed second and Caleb Schumacher placed third in Number Sense. Caitlann Wiley placed second in Prose Interpretation. The One Act Play advanced to the area competition for the first time in several years. All-star cast members included DJ Hernandez and Desiree DeLeon and honorable mention cast members included Andrew Bernal and Garrison Marricle.
Lockney will host the district track meet Friday, April 4. District tennis will be in Plainview on April 2 and district golf will be played on March 31 and April 7.
Changes are already taking place with district personnel. High school principal, Dean Thompson is retiring and will be replaced by current junior high principal, Todd Hallmark, class of ’88. Secondary counselor Patsy Ulmer has retired and will be replaced by Shana (Stapp) Hallmark, class of ’90. Athletic Director and Football Coach Joe Robertson resigned and will be replaced by former Lockney coach Malcom Moerbe. Also returning to Lockney is former high school science teacher Craig Setliff who will become the junior high principal.
Don’t forget that September 19, 2008 is Homecoming. If you class is planning a reunion, let me know and I’ll announce it here and in the near future, I’ll add the announcements to the Alumni page on the website.
With the move to 1A next year, I’ve started a new website that will focus primarily on Region 1 Class 1A high school sports. Stop in at www.wthssports.info for news and information about 1A sports in West Texas.
Back Then… Beth Kellison Remembers
By Beth (Kellison) McNicol, class of ‘49
My parents moved to our farm in the Aiken Community in January of 1948.
The memory I want to share is the fun we had on “Senior Ditch Day” in 1949.
We girls wore our daddy’s white dress shirts with the tails out over the rolled up blue jeans, bobby socks and white and brown “saddle shoes”.
We ditched and went to the drug store for ice cream! We were really “bad”.
We were the only ones who thought it was a secret!

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
To every thing there is a season,
and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate;
A time of war, and a time of peace.
Tech Talk

Everyone has to use a PDF reader from time to time (including reading this newsletter). Adobe Reader 8.1.2 is the one that many are familiar with but there are others that will do the same thing and not use as much system memory. Another good PDF reader is Foxit Reader (www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php). If you need to create PDF files, you might try PDFCreator (www.pdfforge.org). It’s easy to use and makes creating PDFs simple.
Another one of my favorite Firefox add-ons is Tab Mix Plus. Tab Mix Plus enhances the tab capabilities of Firefox. You can control more of what is done with the tabs including allowing multiple rows of tabs, what the mouse and mouse wheel can control with the tabs and many more functions. To download Firefox go to www.mozilla.com and to get add-ons for Firefox go to addons.mozilla.org.
FAVORITE SITES: Sandy (Riley) Jordan, class of ’72 sent me two of her favorite sites: All My Faves (www.allmyfaves.com) and Hulu (www.hulu.com). All My Faves gives you ready access to many of the webs favorite websites, categorized so you can click on their logo and go to the website. Hulu features lots of TV shows and movies for your viewing entertainment. Some of the shows will bring back memories like “Emergency!”, “Doogie Howser, MD”, “WKRP in Cincinnati” and “Lost in Space”. Many of the movies are just favorite clips but some are the full length including “Planet of the Apes” and “October Sky”.
If you have a question or you would like to share a favorite website or software product, send your information to me and I might include it in a future edition. Visit my new blog about Tech News and Tips at http://www.lockney.isd.tenet.edu:7080/blogs/technews/.
WORD OF CAUTION: There is an email that is circulating that is a FAKE Windows update notice. One thing to always remember (if you use Windows) Microsoft NEVER sends out update notices via email so do NOT trust one that is delivered via email. If you receive strange email like this, ask yourself, “How did they get my email address?” It is VERY important to keep your Window machines updated, so go to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us to get your computer updated.
