News around LHS & LISD
By Charles Keaton
Another year has come and gone and a new group of Alumni will be introduced to the world tonight. This will be the last newsletter for this year. Look for the newsletters again in August. Thanks for your support this past year.
Valedictorian for the class of ’08 is Bryan Cooper and Salutatorian is Zach Montandon.
Lauren Stewart, class of ’08, placed second in the UIL Editorial Writing contest and third in the UIL Feature Writing contest at the state UIL academic meet.
Several of our students qualified for the regional track meet but none advanced to the state meet. They included Leah Ford, class of ’08, in shot put, Ashley Valdez, class of ’08, in long jump and 800-meter relay, Brittany Mathis, class of ’09, in triple jump and 800-meter relay, Lezlie Jackson, class of ’10, in pole vault and 800-meter relay, Mercedes Aday, class of ’10, Robbie Reyes, class of ’11, Isabel Solis, class of ’11, all in the 800-meter relay and Caleb Schumacher, class of ’09, in the shot put.
As I mentioned in the March edition, we have several changes taking place in district personnel. Todd Hallmark, ’88, is taking over as high school principal, replacing Dean Thompson. Shana (Stapp, ‘90) Hallmark, is the new secondary counselor, replacing Patsy Ulmer. Malcom Moerbe is returning as athletic director and head football coach, replacing Joe Robertson. Jamie Moerbe will be teaching junior high math, replacing Shana. Craig Setliff will take over as junior high principal, replacing Todd. High school teacher Mike Williams has resigned to accept a new position down state and kindergarten teacher, Kay Abney is retiring.
Don’t forget that September 19, 2008 is Homecoming. If you class is planning a reunion, let me know and I’ll announce it here and in the near future, I’ll add the announcements to the Alumni page on the website.
With the move to 1A next year, I’ve started a new website that will focus primarily on Region 1 Class 1A high school sports. Stop in at www.wthssports.info for news and information about 1A sports in West Texas.

Tech Talk
By Charles Keaton
I came across and site the other day that will let you send larger files (up to 2 GB without registering) to yourself or to someone else. It allows up to 20 downloads of a particular file and keeps a file on its servers for seven days before they are automatically deleted. The site is www.filemail.com. You can pay a monthly fee that will give you larger uploads but not larger files and will allow more downloads and longer time on their servers. Seems like a great way to share files, especially pictures or videos that are too large for email and the nice thing is it’s free unless you want to upgrade.
I don’t have a Firefox add-on to share with you this month BUT let me share some information about Firefox. The newest version, Firefox 3.0, will be released later this summer. I’ve been testing and trying out the last beta and the first release candidate. It is DEFINITELY an upgrade to Firefox you will want to download. If you are a fellow ‘geek’ go ahead and download RC1 but if you are a little intimidated by technology, wait for the final release to come out. Watch www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/ for information on the official release date.
Some of the improvements in FF3 include improvements to the user interface, autocomplete location bar, improved security, web compatibility and stability. Malware protection is built into the browser as well as integration with your anti-virus program. The developers have improved the password management, simplified the add-on installation and made the browser more personal with improvements in the handling of new bookmarks as well as old bookmarks. If you use Firefox, you will want to download the new version, if you have never used Firefox, when the new version comes out, give it a try; I think you will be pleased.
If you have a question or you would like to share a favorite website or software product, send your information to me and I might include it in a future edition. Visit my new blog about Tech News and Tips at http://www.lockney.isd.tenet.edu:7080/blogs/technews/.
WORD OF CAUTION: There is an email that is circulating that is a FAKE Windows update notice. One thing to always remember (if you use Windows) Microsoft NEVER sends out update notices via email so do NOT trust one that is delivered via email. If you receive strange email like this, ask yourself, “How did they get my email address?” It is VERY important to keep your Window machines updated, so go to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us to get your computer updated.
