News around LHS & LISD
By Charles Keaton

The new school year has been rolling along for three weeks. Everything seems to be going along very well.

New faces on the campuses this year include Ryan Dollar who is teaching government and economics and is the new head boys basketball coach; Keegan Reynolds who is the PE coach and assists with the girls’ athletic programs; Jeff Dunn who is teaching junior high math and coaching; Sammie Setliff who is the new 4th grade assistant; and Virginia Hernandez returns as the Pre-K assistant.

The football season is under way but the Horns have yet to break into the win column. On opening night, the Horns traveled to Slaton to take on the Tigers after the weather delayed the game, the Horns looked like they might break into the win column until the Tigers scored with a minute left to take a 19-18 victory. Last week county rival, Floydada came to town for the 90th battle for the County Championship and proceeded to take the trophy back to Whirlwind country for the third year in a row with a 40-16 victory. This week the Claude Mustangs come to town. The Mustangs have yet to light up the scoreboard this year first losing to Clarendon 58-0 and then losing to Memphis 36-0. Maybe this is the week to break the streak that dates back to the 2005 season when the Horns last put a W in win column defeating Dimmitt 42-0 on Oct. 28, 2005.

Next week is Homecoming. The Horns will host the Springlake Wolverines at 7:30 PM on Sept. 19. There are many activities planned for that weekend including Old Fashioned Saturday concluding with a street dance Saturday evening. Check the website for more details.

With the move to 1A next year, I’ve started a new website that will focus primarily on Region 1 Class 1A high school sports. Stop in at www.wthssports.info for news and information about 1A sports in West Texas.

My apologies for not getting a newsletter out sooner but someone  (that shall rename nameless --- ME!) decided to have a ‘fight’ with the floor night before school started and broke a bone in the right hand. It has slowed MANY things down including this newsletter.

Tech Talk
By Charles Keaton

With many of us having high speed Internet connections these days, sometime it’s nice to know if you are getting what you pay for inn the way of speed. A couple of websites that I use to check my Internet speeds are: http://myspeed.visualware.com/ and http://www.bandwidthplace.com/. There are many others out there and nearly all of them will give a little different result. It is nice to know if the speed you’ve been told by your service provider is what you are getting.
