News around LHS & LISD
By Charles Keaton
As October begins winding down, I remembered that I hadn’t put out a newsletter. I will have another one out right before Turkey Day.
Homecoming 2008 was a wonderful success, although marred by the untimely death of Staff Sgt. Wesley Hunter, class of ’98. Wesley had returned home with his wife and two children to celebrate the 10th reunion of the class of ’98 but on Thursday, Sept. 18 he laid down for a nap and did not awake. Wesley was wounded in Iraq in 2006 and had been battling the injuries ever since. During the incident in which Wesley was wounded, two of his fellow soldiers were mortally wounded.
Wesley is survived by his wife, Rayanne, two children, Westlin and Tavie, his parents Bill and Kathy Hunter (Kathy is a kindergarten teacher at Lockney Elementary, his sister, Mandy (Mandy teaches 5th grade at Lockney Elementary), his brother Jeffrey and his niece Anna. Mandy and Jeffrey are both LHS grads and Anna goes to Lockney Junior High.
Services were held in Lockney and Wesley was buried with full military honors at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
The Longhorns continue to struggle on the football field. They defeated Springlake for Homecoming 30-14, lost to Nazareth 32-9, won their district opener over Crosbyton, 30-0, then lost to district frontrunner, New Deal, 31-8 and lost to Olton, 20-12. The Horns conclude their season on the road at Ralls and at home against Hale Center. The Horns must win their last two games in order to have a chance to make the playoffs. Currently in district, New Deal is 3-0, Olton is 2-1 and everyone else is at 1-2.
Basketball season starts Nov. 11, with the girls traveling to Farwell then on Nov. 14 they travel to Floydada. The boys begin play Nov. 18 at home against Petersburg (depending on football playoffs for both schools).
With the move to 1A, I’ve started a new website that will focus primarily on Region 1 Class 1A high school sports. Stop in at www.wthssports.info for news and information about 1A sports in West Texas.

Tech Talk
By Charles Keaton
Have you been bitten by the nasty “Antivirus 2009” bug. It’s a new rogue antivirus program that is TOUGH to remove. One way to remove it from your computer is to download a free trial of Sophos Endpoint Security and Control at http://www.sophos.com/products/enterprise/free-trials/. Sophos gives you a 30-day trial that will give you a chance to get rid of 2009 and decide if you like Sophos.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, don’t forget that you can go to www.butterball.com for information about turkey cooking as well as other recipes for a wonderful Thanksgiving meal.
If you remember back in the January newsletter, I mentioned OpenOffice as a free alternative to other well known office suites. They have recently released version 3.0. It has some nice improvements including the ability to open files created in Microsoft Office 2007 programs. It’s available at http://www.openoffice.org.
I found a new add-on to Firefox called Easy DragToGo. It lets you open a new tab with a link using a simple mouse gesture. Add-ons for Firefox can be found at http://addons.mozilla.org.

Don’t forget that I’m now providing Alumni Notebook pages on the website. The notebook page allows you to provide more information for your classmates besides an email address. This is strictly voluntary and you can provide as much or as little of information that you want. I hope more of you will take advantage of this service as a way to communicate with classmates.
