They have finally started tearing down the burned-out shell of LHS this week. More pictures soon.

Summer has definitely arrived in Lockney. 104 yesterday and probably that hot if not hotter today and tomorrow, I am looking forward to visiting Ruidoso for a few days!!

The sounds of demolition are now taking place in the science labs and around the HS. It's good to see work beginning on the rebuild.

Since the last posting there have been a few more resignations/retirements: Charlotte Brock, HS Secretary retired; Haley Shipman, 3rd grade teacher, resigned; and Cailey Stoerner, JH Special Ed, resigned.

Football is less than two months away, but it's hard to think about that when it's over 100 outside, but when Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine comes out, it becomes a discussion item around all of Texas. The writers picked Lockney 5th but they've been wrong before. I personally think that if we can avoid the injury bug that bit us last year, we'll be knocking on the playoff door, but again, that's my opinion.

The Lockney Longhorn Baseball Team loss two games to Miles in the Regional Finals last week to end their season. Miles took game one on Thursday 9-5 and game two on Friday 5-1. The Longhorns conclude their season with a 24-9-1 record, a year after only winning three games in 2A ball. The Horns lose five seniors to graduation, Jonathan Coleman, Lucas Hall, Angel Cruz, Brett Johnson and Kyler Ellison. Congratulations on a great season.

The Lady Horns sprint relay team placed sixth at the State Track meet Saturday. Members of the team include Mercedes Aday, Brittany Mathis, Lezlie Jackson and Logan Edwards. Congratulations to the Ladies on their great track season.

At the State Academic UIL meet, the Literary Criticism team placed third overall with Anna Sherman placing 13th, Kami Hunt 16th, Alisha Damron 17th and Emily Prayor 19th. The Number Sense team placed fourth overall with Lezlie Jackson placing 8th, Dylan Aufill 17th, Quinn Jackson 19th and Caleb Schumacher 20th. Congratulations to these students for their accomplishments.

The Lockney Longhorns baseball team will face the Miles Bulldogs in a three game series beginning Thursday, June 4 at 6:00 PM in Snyder at Moffett Field. Games 2 and 3 will start at 4:00 PM Friday, June 5 in Snyder and if necessary game 3 will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of game 2.

Winner of this series advances to the State Tournament next week in Round Rock.

The Longhorn baseball team defeated the Ralls Jackrabbits in two games to advance to the regional finals for the first time in school history. Thursday night the Horns prevailed 10-7, the two teams took Friday night off for graduation they met again Saturday afternoon where the Horns again won by a score of 9-0.

The Horns will play the Miles Bulldogs the weekend of June 6. Number of games, times and places have not been decided yet.

Graduation for the class of 2009 will be next Friday evening at 7:00 PM in the Longhorn Gym.

The #9 ranked Longhorn Baseball team defeated Stamford 10-1 to advance to the regional quarterfinals against Vernon Northside. The three-game series begins Friday, May 22 in Plainview at Wayland Baptist University at 5:00 PM. Games 2 and 3 will be played in Vernon on Saturday, May 23 at Vernon High School beginning at 1:00 PM with game 3, if necessary, 30 minutes after the end of game 2. GO HORNS!!!!

The Literary Criticism and Number Sense teams will be competing at the State UIL Academics contest in Austin on Monday and Tuesday, May 25-26. The State contest were originally scheduled for May 7-9 but due to the N1H1 (swine) flu scare, it was postponed until May 25-26. Best of luck to these two teams.

The Lady Horns Sprint Relay team will be competing at the State Track Meet June 5-6. Good luck girls!!

Repairs to the science labs and the library/media center are scheduled to begin in the next few weeks as is demolition of the old high school. Plans are still being considered for the new building.

LHS has 8 students that are advancing to the State UIL competition. The Literary Criticism team consisting of Alisha Damron (1st at Regionals), Anna Sherman, Emily Prayor and Kami Hunt and the Number Sense team consisting of Dylan Aufill (1st at Regionals), Lezlie Jackson (3rd at Regionals), Caleb Schumacher and Quinn Jackson will all compete in Austin May 7-9. Congratulations to all of them and their coaches.

The Lady Horns softball team lost to New Deal Monday, April 27 in a playoff seeding game. ND is the third place team in the district.

The Longhorn baseball team are district champions again. They will have a first round bye and then play the winner of the district 7 third place team and the district 8 second place team.

BGR Architects of Lubbock, which includes Lockney alumni Steve Aufill, has been chosen to design the new high school and Lee Lewis Construction of Lubbock has been chosen as the construction manager. Repair work should start soon on the library and science rooms (the original gym area on the south end of the building) and work on the rest of the high school will begin after plans are finalized.

Ok, so my blog writing is not very consistent. I should discipline myself to write on my blogs at least once a week ... I will try my best to start doing that.

Everyone seems to be talking and asking about Twitter. It's a rapidly, growing social network which asks the simple question "What are you doing?" What is Twitter? According to Wikipedia "Twitter is a free social-networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers)." Twitter is used by individuals that tweet about their daily lives as well as businesses that can post their latest news or link to their blogs. Who Twitters? Al Roker of NBC's Today Show (@alroker), David Gregory of Meet the Press (@davidgregory), Texas Tech University (@TexasTech) and millions more. Yes, I Twitter @textechgeek. Check out this latest phenomenon. Is it useful in education? Maybe. Is it useful in business? Maybe. Is it fun? Definitely.

Lockney HS hosted the district 5A UIL Academics meet last week. LHS students placing include James Mercado in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, 4th; Literary Criticism team 1st team, individuals: Alisha Damron, 1st, Anna Sherman, 2nd, Kami Hunt, 3rd and Emily Prayor 4th; Lezlie Jackson 2nd Math; Number Sense 1st team, individuals: Lezlie Jackson, 1st, Dylan Aufill, 2nd, Caleb Schumacher, 4th and Quinn Jackson, 9th; Robbie Reyes, 4th News Writing; Caitlann Wiley, 5th Prose; Chris Rodriguez high point in the Physics part of the science test. The One Act Play advance out of Zone but did not advance out of district.

LHS also hosted the District 5A track meet. Lockney Girls placing include the sprint relay team, 2nd, members: Brittany Mathis, Lezlie Jackson, Logan Edwards and Mercedes Aday; 800M run, Crystal Sanchez, 4th; 100M Hurdles, Lindsie Moerbe, 3rd; 800M relay, 4th, members: Brittany Mathis, Mercedes Aday, Lezlie Jackson and Logan Edwards; 400M dash, Isabel Solis, 2nd; 200M dash, Brittany Mathis, 3rd; 1600M run, Crystal Sanchez, 5th; 1600M relay, 5th, members: Lezlie Jackson, Tanya Hernandez, Jasmin Rodriguez and Isabel Solis; Pole Vault, Lezlie Jackson, 2nd; and Triple Jump, Brittany Mathis, 2nd and Lezlie Jackson, 3rd. The girls placed 5th as a team.

For the boys track, 110M Hurdles, James Mercado, 5th; 300M Hurdles, James Mercado, 4th; 1600M relay 3rd, members: Michael Vasquez, Louis Peralez, Brent Zambrano and Josua Silva; Shot Put, Adrian Cortez, 4th; and Triple Jump, Michael Vasquez, 6th.

Congratulations to all these students on their accomplishments. I believe this is the 17th consecutive year for the Number Sense team to win district!!
